Right in the middle of southern Africa lies Zambia, largely high plateaus with several large rivers flowing through. Much of the country is covered by rainforests and woodland plains. Famous are the Victoria Falls, in the Zambezi River on the border with Zimbabwe, but there are at least 15 other large waterfalls scattered around Zambia.

Zambia has 19 national parks. Largest and most renowned are Kafue National Park and South Luangwa National Park. In both parks guided walking safari's with wildlife viewing are popular. Zambia is also home to some quite remote and much less visited national parks, such as Lower Zambezi National Park and the privately owned Kasanka National Park. Guided walking safari's are possible in many of the parks.

Best time for hiking appears to be in June, July and August, when it is relatively dry and cool at night. Most rains fall from December till March, and roads can get very muddy. This is also the warmest season.
