Descripción

Malawi

Malawi is located in southeastern Africa, squeezed in between Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Main feature is Lake Malawi, which it shares with Tanzania and Mozambique. The lake is part of the Great Rift Valley running right across Malawi from north to south. Mountains and plateaus rise up on both sides.

Popular among hikers and climbers is Mount Mulanje (or Mlanje) in the south of Malawi. The mountain massif is of volcanic origin, and rises up steeply from the surrounding plains. Highest point is Sapitwa Peak (3002 m). There are several very basic wooden mountain huts scattered around the area, but carry along everything you need. For general info on Mount Mulanje and other hiking possibilities in the region, visit the Mountain Club of Malawi (MCM) website (see under Organisations).

There are other opportunities for hiking in Malawi's national parks and nature reserves. For instance in Nyika NP in the north, in Dzalanyama and Ntchisi Forest Reserves and in the Viphya Highlands.
