GR223 Camí de Cavalls, Circular trail starting and ending in Maó, 186 km, 10 days

A very interesting project on the Balearic Island of Menorca is the restoration of an old coastal route that circumvents the entire island. The name Camí de Cavalls means horse road. It once interconnected the system of watch towers around the island.

The restoration was completed in 2011, and now this pretty trail is there to be explored. The perfect island walk. Sometimes, the path closely follows the coast, but often it ventures a bit inland over the dry earth or over hills with shrubs and traces of forest (for some reason forest are not long lived on these islands). On the stages along the east and south coast one will often leave one village or resort to immediately enter another one. But elsewhere, the in-between landscape will be attractive. The west and especially the north coast is very lonely and it might even be difficult to find accommodation here.
